A 10-year-old boy from Central Florida suffered a horrific loss after he was attacked by a shark while snorkeling in the Florida Keys over the weekend. The young victim, whose identity has not been released, was on vacation with his family when the incident occurred.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the boy was snorkeling near a coral reef off the coast of Cudjoe Key on Saturday afternoon when he was bitten by a shark. The boy's father immediately pulled him out of the water and rushed him to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery to amputate part of his leg.

The boy is currently recovering in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The shark attack is under investigation, and the type of shark responsible for the attack has not been determined.

Shark attacks are relatively rare in the Florida Keys, but they can occur. In 2021, there were 14 reported shark attacks in the state, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History. Of those, 10 were unprovoked attacks, meaning the shark initiated contact with a human.

Experts recommend taking precautions to avoid shark attacks, such as swimming in groups, avoiding areas where sharks are known to congregate, and not wearing jewelry or shiny objects that could attract sharks. If you are attacked by a shark, experts recommend remaining calm and trying to fight off the shark by punching or kicking it. You should also try to get out of the water as quickly as possible.
